What "#5" actually means
The number refers to the width of the closed zipper teeth in millimetres – so a #5 zipper has teeth that are roughly 5mm wide when zipped. #3 zippers are smaller (better for pencil cases, makeup bags, small wallets), and #8 or #10 are bigger (heavy-duty, outerwear, luggage). #5 is the goldilocks zone for most handmade bag projects.
